Rebels & Dreamers: The Art of Revolution
A studio program for young artists inspired by the rebels, risk-takers, and dreamers who changed art forever.
This program invites young artists to step into the world of those who dared to disrupt tradition, challenge expectations, and imagine art in completely new ways. This program explores the major turning points in art history, moments where artists broke from convention and reshaped the way the world sees creativity.
Each week, students will be introduced to a different art movement such as: Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art; and discover the bold ideas, new techniques, and original voices that defined them. We look at how artists turned away from realism, explored emotion over accuracy, fractured perspective, painted dreams, distorted form, and elevated everyday objects into works of art.
In the studio, students will:
Study the story and spirit of each movement
Explore one key artist who helped lead the change
Examine what made their work radical for its time
Create original artworks inspired by the movement’s ideas, techniques, and philosophy
Rather than copying masterworks, students will use the movements as a launching point to explore their own concepts, colour choices, and expressive style. Material use includes drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and creative mixed media, chosen to reflect the techniques and spirit of each movement.
Rebels & Dreamers is more than an art history program, it is a creative exploration of how and why art changes, and how young artists can think for themselves, take risks, experiment, and cultivate their own artistic voice.
A program for children who don’t just want to learn about art, they want to understand how art speaks, evolves, and dares.
Inclusive of all materials and tools (watercolour paper, watercolour paints, acrylic paints, canvases, easels, paintbrushes, aprons, graphite pencils, colouring pencils, etc.)
Note to Parents:
Studio sessions will begin on time and will finish on time. Please keep this in mind when collecting your child/children. Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay and observe. Sessions require a great deal of concentration and interest and are suitable for children who are adept at maintaining focus. Please take note that paintbox is NOT a child-minding facility but instead is a place where creative individuals can learn skills to assist them in their artistic pursuits. An atmosphere of kindness, respect and cooperation is essential. paintbox will exercise the right to withhold services/lessons to any student who displays disorderly and disruptive behaviours.
