In Term 2 at paintbox, our young artists will explore one of the most powerful tools in art — light and shadow.
From the glow of candlelight to the deep contrasts of night scenes, artists throughout history have used light to create mood, depth, and drama. In this studio program, students will learn how artists shape form and atmosphere by observing where light falls, where shadows gather, and how contrast brings an image to life.
Across the 10-week term, students will experiment with a range of materials including graphite, watercolour, gouache, and acrylic paint while developing essential artistic skills such as tonal drawing, contrast, composition, and the illusion of three-dimensional form.
Projects may include dramatic still-life studies, nocturnal landscapes, atmospheric scenes, and expressive artworks built through strong contrasts of light and dark. Students will also explore how artists use dramatic lighting and tonal relationships to transform ordinary subjects into powerful works of art.
As always at paintbox, the focus is on thoughtful studio practice, quality materials, and nurturing each student's creative voice.
Suitable for children 6yrs old to high school.
Limited spots. Bookings are essential.
Inclusive of all materials and tools (watercolour paper, watercolour paints, acrylic paints, canvases, easels, paintbrushes, aprons, graphite pencils, colouring pencils, etc.)
Note to Parents:
Studio sessions will begin on time and will finish on time. Please keep this in mind when collecting your child/children. Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay and observe. Sessions require a great deal of concentration and interest and are suitable for children who are adept at maintaining focus. Please take note that paintbox is NOT a child-minding facility but instead is a place where creative individuals can learn skills to assist them in their artistic pursuits. An atmosphere of kindness, respect and cooperation is essential. paintbox will exercise the right to withhold services/lessons to any student who displays disorderly and disruptive behaviours.
